What is the PADI Deep Diver Course?
This course is all about in-depth dive planning, awareness, and control. It’s designed to train certified divers to recognize and respond to the physical and physiological challenges of deep diving, and to plan and execute deep dives safely.
You’ll gain knowledge in:
Physiology of deep diving (gas narcosis, air consumption, oxygen toxicity)
Effects of pressure and nitrogen at depth
Planning deep dives with dive computers and tables
Handling emergency decompression procedures
Managing gas supply and turn points
Using redundant air sources and DSMBs
Monitoring no-decompression limits and surface intervals
Course Structure
The PADI Deep Diver course includes four deep dives, usually conducted over 2 days. Each dive builds on the last, progressively introducing you to the techniques, planning, and mental preparedness needed for safe deep diving.
Typical Dive Progression:
Dive One – Introduction to deep diving; descent techniques; gas management; dive planning
Dive Two – Recognizing and managing nitrogen narcosis; using backup equipment
Dive Three – Deep navigation, buddy communication, and emergency procedures
Dive Four – Simulated problem-solving at depth; safety stop strategies; air-sharing ascents
What You’ll Learn
How to plan deep dives and manage bottom time
How to deal with narcosis and minimize risk
How to manage buoyancy at depth
Use of backup systems (air sources, lights, reels)
Deep dive team protocols and emergency procedures
Performing controlled ascents and safety stops
Optional but recommended:
PADI Enriched Air Nitrox certification (Nitrox helps optimize bottom time and reduce nitrogen uptake — ideal for deeper profiles)
